How to choose your surfskate: size, wheelbase, and C7 or CX trucks
Updated September 25, 2026 · by GlissEvolution · 8 min read
Choosing a surfskate starts with the front truck, then its length. Graphics come last. Here's how to decide between a Carver C7 and a Carver CX, what size to pick based on your body size, and what we have in stock at the Pornichet shop for those flat days.
A surfskate is a skateboard with a front truck that turns far more than a classic truck. By shifting your weight from rail to rail, you pump the board to gain speed without ever putting your foot down, just like pumping on a wave. Carver, the brand that invented the surfskate in California in 1996, now offers three truck systems: the C7, the CX, and the C5.
Quick Guidelines
- If you're a beginner, Carver recommends a 30 to 33-inch board with CX trucks.
- For surfers looking to train on land, the C7 offers the closest surf feel.
- If you have a small body size or want super tight turns, go for 28 to 30 inches.
- For riders with a large body size or those needing more stability, aim for the upper end of the range: 32.5 inches and up.
- We have 11 Carver surfskates in stock at the shop, ranging from €179.90 to €339.90 (catalog price as of 09/25/2026).

Surfskate, longboard, cruiser: what's the real difference?
On a cruiser or longboard, you push with your foot to move forward and turn by leaning on the rails. The truck pivots within a limited range. A surfskate, however, features a front truck mounted on a geometry that allows for a much greater angle. This lets the board turn sharply, and if you link heel and toe presses with your upper body, it gains speed on its own. That's pumping.
Carver trucks are designed with different turning dynamics for the front and rear. The front truck (C7 or CX) has a unique geometry compared to the C2 rear truck. This allows for significantly more pivot. This difference creates that surf-like power delivery you crave.
C7 or CX: which truck should you choose?
This is the most important decision. On the same deck, the truck changes the board's behavior more than ten centimeters of length. It also impacts the price: for example, the 30.5-inch Lost Puddle Jumper V4 costs €299.90 with CX trucks and €339.90 with C7 trucks, while the 31-inch Resin is €289.90 with CX and €319.90 with C7.
The C7: closest to surfing
The C7 is Carver's original truck. It features a double axis: a pivoting arm held by a compression spring carries the hanger, and this arm moves laterally in addition to the classic tilt. Carver describes it as the closest you can get to surfing on asphalt, perfect for surf training and flow sessions with maximum lateral movement. You can adjust it with the spring bolt to stiffen or loosen it. The trade-off is that it's heavier and requires a few sessions to find the right pumping rhythm.
The CX: the most allround
The CX uses an inverted kingpin truck design, without an arm or spring, but with a patented geometry that still allows for pumping and a short turning radius. Carver describes it as livelier than the C7, stable at speed, easy to push for everyday use, and calls it the most allround truck in their range. If you plan to hit the pumptrack or bowl occasionally, it handles landings better.
What about the C5?
Lighter and lower, the C5 makes the surfskate feel more like a classic skateboard, ideal for skateparks and tricks. We do not have any in stock at the moment.
| Truck | Principle | Feel | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carver C7 | Double axle, spring-loaded pivot arm | Fluid, wide range of motion, rail-to-rail turns | Surfers training on land, flow sessions |
| Carver CX | Single axle, inverted kingpin | Lively, direct, more stable at speed | Perfect for beginners, daily commutes, and even some pumptrack action. |
| Carver C5 | Single axle, low profile. | Feels similar to a classic skateboard. | Ideal for skatepark and tricks (currently not in stock). |
What surfskate size is right for your body build?
Carver emphasizes one crucial point: for a surfskate, length is more important than width. Wheelbase is also more important than width. The wheelbase is the distance between your two truck mounts. A longer wheelbase means a wider stance, which gives you more stability and longer, flowing turns. A shorter wheelbase, on the other hand, makes for quicker turns.
| Length | Behavior | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|
| 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm) | Lively, tight turns. | Great for smaller body builds, kids, and riders who love short, snappy turns. |
| 30 to 33 inches (76 to 84 cm) | Fluid ride, easy to pump on flat ground. | Suits the majority of riders. |
| Over 33 inches (84 cm and up) | Stable, maintains speed, and excels at large, sweeping turns. | Designed for larger riders and carving descents. |
Your shoe size also plays a role. If you have larger feet, a wide tail and well-defined foot zones will give you a better hold. If you're torn between two sizes, tell us your height and weight. We also need to know what you want to do with the board, and we'll help you find the perfect fit.

Our selection of Carver surfskates
Which model for which rider profile?
Your first surfskate. Look no further than the Carver Resin CX 31. Carver itself recommends this model for beginner riders. The brand states its 17-inch wheelbase hits the sweet spot for all riding styles. It's also our most affordable Carver outside the Triton range.
You surf and want to practice your turns on flat days. Grab a C7 between 30.5 and 31.25 inches: the Lost Puddle Jumper V4 C7, the Resin C7, or the Cosmic Haze C7. The Puddle Jumper features the same shape as the …Lost surfboard of the same name.
Larger rider, or you want long turns and stability. The Black Label C7 32.5 or the Electric Acid C7 32.5 are for you. They share the same deck and a 17.75-inch wheelbase, the longest in our stock. Only the graphics differ.
Smaller rider, teenager, or you like very tight turns. Check out the 29-inch CX models: Lost Hydra, Lost Pisces, or CI Fish. The CI Fish was designed in collaboration with Channel Islands.
Tight budget. The Triton Raw 29 Guidance CX at €179.90 is a great option. It features the same CX truck as the Carver, but with a narrower deck (9.75 inches) and a short wheelbase. This makes it ideal for a lighter rider.
Adjusting your surfskate upon receipt
Factory settings let you ride immediately. If you want to fine-tune your setup, here's what Carver recommends.
On a C7: the 0-1-2 rule
- 0 on the pivot bolt: leave it alone. It should be just tight enough to secure it without crushing the bearings.
- 1 on the kingpin nut: tighten it very little. If it's too loose, you risk wheelbite, where the wheel touches the deck and stops you dead.
- 2 on the spring bolt, at the back of the baseplate: this is your main adjustment point. Tighten it fully, then loosen it two to five half-turns. The more you loosen, the freer the arm and the more it surfs. Make sure to keep enough tension so the truck returns to the center on its own.
On a CX
Always leave at least one thread visible above the kingpin nut. The two bushings look similar: the taller one goes towards the deck, the shorter one towards the road. It's normal for bushings to feel slippery out of the box; the mold release agent will wear off after a few hours of riding.
You only need one wrench for all these adjustments. We stock the Carver wrench for €24.90.
Things to consider before buying.
A surfskate isn't the best choice for covering miles in the city. On a C7, you're constantly pumping, and on long straight lines, a cruiser or longboard is less tiring. If your main use is commuting, grab a CX. Carver describes the CX as easy to push daily.
29-inch boards are below the 30 to 33-inch range that Carver recommends for most riders. While they have their fans, a tall adult will feel cramped on them.
As of September 25, 2026, we have one of each model in stock, with two units of the Triton Raw 29 Guidance. The prices listed are the official catalog prices for that date. And remember, a helmet is always a good idea while you're getting the hang of pumping.
FAQ: Choosing Your Surfskate
What surfskate size should you choose?
Carver suggests 28 to 30 inches for smaller body sizes, kids, and tight turns. Most riders will find 30 to 33 inches ideal, while those over 33 inches are best for larger body sizes and high-speed stability. Remember, wheelbase matters more than width.
C7 or CX for beginner surfskaters?
Carver recommends the CX for beginner riders. It features a single axle, feels intuitive from your very first session, offers stability at speed, and is easy to push. The C7 provides more travel and a ride feel closer to surfing, but it does require an adaptation period.
Does surfskate help improve surfing?
It helps you practice rail-to-rail weight transfer and upper body rotation, just like you would in a turn on a wave. Carver positions the C7 as its truck that's closest to surfing for training. It won't replace paddling or learning to read waves.
What's the difference between a surfskate and a longboard?
A surfskate's front truck pivots significantly more. This allows for super tight turns and lets you generate speed by pumping, without needing to push with your foot. A longboard, on the other hand, offers more stability in a straight line and requires less effort to push over long distances.
Can you go to the skatepark with a surfskate?
Absolutely! They're great for riding in bowls and on the pumptrack. The CX handles landings better than the C7. For tricks, Carver designed the C5, which is lower and lighter, but we don't currently have it in stock.
How do you adjust a Carver C7 truck?
Carver simplifies the adjustment to 0-1-2: no adjustment on the pivot bolt, very little on the kingpin nut, and the real adjustment happens on the spring bolt. Tighten it fully, then loosen it two to five half-turns for a looser truck.
